Lucky Magazine October 2011

Great issue!

So many cute outfit ideas. I'm definitely doing Gigi Guerra's sequin top over a black turtleneck. Also Jean Godfrey-June gives us permission to wear tights under shorts. I want to try it with my JCrew desert boot wedges.

The Office Spy section covers Etsy which is awesome since it's a Brooklyn based startup. (Aside: kind of disappointed that only 1 of the 5 ladies featured were in tech).

Sara Ziff's Picture Me

Finally got around to watching Picture Me last night. It was fairly entertaining, but probably didn't say anything that someone who doesn't follow the fashion industry doesn't already know. Definitely good for younger girls to watch. I too idolized models when I was younger. She touched on some interesting really interesting points though. For example, the fact that most models on the runway are in their early teens and that's part of the reason why they're so thin. Their youth also makes them easy to exploit.

Why is the starbucks x Alexander Wang shirt so ugly

Combining two things I love, Alexander Wang and Starbucks, should make an even more lovable thing. Unfortunately, what we got was this $85 monstrosity. All of the shirts look like rejects from threadless, but this one is by far the worst. Maybe I'm upset about it because I feel like I should be enamored by it. Isn't there something more interesting or creative that could have been done than a stain in the shape of the logo?

Nutty Bubble

Guy Trebay has an interesting post on how real people shop. I loved the opening paragraph

People who spend a lot of time around the luxury-goods trade live in what Linda Fargo, the fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman, termed the other day “a nutty bubble.’’ While the world outside the Fashion Week tents teeters on the economic brink, the people inside them teeter around on shoes, she said, for which they think nothing of spending $1,500 a pair.

Best Quote Ever

"Only buy what you absolutely love. And develop a closet of those really special styles. It doesn’t mean they have to be expensive, just that you love them. Then start to mix them up in as many looks as possible. Photograph them so you can see what you like best. The more time that goes by, the more editing you can do until you have a refined selection, and, every day you could literally wear a different outfit that is an expression of your personal style."

Thinking about models..

Well, fashion week started today and NYC and especially my gym are crawling with models. Being face to face with naked models in the locker room day after day can bring out a weird side of a lady. First off, I think it's really really hard to have a rational discussion about modeling as a job because of all the weird emotions and jealousy involved. Mmm. let me back up a little more.

Horribly Unflattering: Cheap Monday Second Skin Jeans

Ok, I'm going to say it: THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES! Why do people like Cheap Mondays so much? I just do not get it. My two major problems with them:

I love this article about Jenna Lyons

Today’s good outfit follows the same principle as an addictively well-sourced Tumblr. It is less about sexiness (and label worship) than it is about a gestalt of sophistication, intelligence, and humor.

It's no secret that jcrew is my favorite store. Obviously I think Jenna Lyons is amazing. Great article about her in this week's NYMag. Who knew she had a skin disease and dentures?

Jersey Shore Premium Outlets (More June Purchases)

I made a trip down to the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets yesterday. I hadn't been to an outlet mall in years, and except for Theory none of the stores had the real clothes. I had read about how outlet mall shops had different items than non outlet mall shops, but I was actually kind of shocked. Basically, they have similar cuts and designs, but using cheaper fabrics and construction.
